FAQs

Why choose Rose City Acupuncture & Massage?

You’re really choosing me, Sharon Rose. The Portland area has many excellent acupuncturists: Here’s what makes my practice different. First, my osteopathic-style medical massage directly affects how your muscles and nervous system function. Rather than providing only temporary relaxation, this work creates lasting change, allowing your body to truly heal. Second, I see only one patient at a time. I will never leave you to treat someone else in another room. Your session is private, unrushed, and fully focused on you. I’m also known for being especially gentle, even by acupuncture standards. On your first visit, I explain everything I’m doing step by step, so you always feel informed, comfortable, and in control.

How does acupuncture work?

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective: Acupuncture is based on a system of energetic organs and channels (called Qi or Chi) that run throughout the body. These channels, known as meridians, have specific qualities and functions. Acupuncture points are places where these channels are accessible near the surface of the body. A helpful analogy is a river: - When the flow is weak or depleted, we see deficiency, which can cause fatigue or weakness. - When the flow is blocked or excessive, we see stagnation, which often causes pain. Each acupuncture point works both individually and in combination with others. Learning this system takes years of dedicated study, which explains why a fully trained TCM practitioner, familiar with nearly 1,000 points, can achieve better results than a doctor or physical therapist who took a brief course. Some points align closely with Western anatomy, such as locations at neuromuscular junctions that affect nerve signaling. Others are explained through TCM principles — for example, using a Water point to calm excess Fire (heat or inflammation). Some effects are still not fully understood, such as a point on the lower leg that reliably relieves pain in the opposite shoulder. While we may not yet understand every mechanism, thousands of years of clinical use have proven acupuncture to be a powerful and effective medical system. From a Western medical perspective: The needles create a very small, controlled micro-trauma that stimulates the body’s healing response. This is particularly helpful for chronic issues, as it helps “reopen the cold case” for conditions the body has stopped responding to. Some points influence how nerves communicate with muscles. Others help reset nerve signaling — similar to rebooting a computer — or redirect pain signals. Acupuncture also plays a role in moderating inflammation, reducing swelling, and improving circulation.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture needles are extremely fine, about the thickness of a human hair, and much smaller than needles used for injections or blood draws. You may feel a brief pinch as the needle enters the skin, and then usually nothing at all. Some people experience mild sensations such as heaviness, warmth, tingling, or a dull ache. These are generally gentle and not painful. I use a very light touch, because precise technique produces excellent results without strong stimulation. You are always in control. If you ask me to slow down or stop, I will do so immediately. If you’re uncomfortable with needles or prefer not to use them, acupressure is always an option.

What should I expect during and after a session?

Most people feel deeply relaxed during treatment — falling asleep is common. You may feel warmer as circulation and Qi improve. Afterward, some patients describe a mild, pleasant “floaty” feeling. If you’re coming in with a specific concern, such as back pain or sinus congestion, most people notice improvement right away. Some people, especially those with long-standing or complex issues and more mature patients, tend to feel changes later that evening or the next day as the nervous system integrates the treatment. If your session includes medical massage, additional improvement often continues over the following day or two. Constitutional concerns like such as digestive or hormonal issues usually respond best to a short series of treatments.

What if I don’t believe in acupuncture?

That’s perfectly fine. Acupuncture works on a physical level and does not depend on belief. I’ve successfully treated skeptical humans and animals with excellent results. (Ask me about Pelé the bunny sometime!)

Are the needles sterile?

Yes, always. I use only single-use, disposable, sterile surgical steel needles.

How should I prepare for my treatment?

Wear whatever is comfortable. If I need to treat an area that requires undressing, I’ll step out while you get settled under the sheet on the massage table. Your comfort and privacy are always respected. Try to eat a light meal within a few hours of your appointment — not hungry, but not overly full. When you book online, you’ll have access to a detailed intake form. It’s thorough and usually takes about 20 minutes to complete. You don’t need to do it right away, just sometime before your first visit.

Does insurance cover acupuncture?

Some plans do, and some don’t. If you have an open car accident claim, I’m happy to bill auto insurance directly so there’s no out-of-pocket cost to you. For health insurance and workers’ compensation claims, payment is due at the time of service. I provide a detailed receipt with the appropriate medical codes so you can submit it for reimbursement. Coverage and reimbursement amounts depend on your individual policy, and I will be considered an out-of-network provider.

Can I get a relaxing massage?

My bodywork is medically based. While it’s gentle and calming, the primary focus is correcting muscular dysfunction and regulating the nervous system. If you’re looking for a spa-style experience, I may not be the best fit. If you’re looking for long-term change in how your body feels and functions, you’re in the right place.

Kind words

For nearly ten years of my professional life I was a bodily injury insurance adjuster so there was some initial cynicism when my wife told me she wanted to try acupuncture as a way of relieving her intense low back pain. By "intense" I am referring to a 10 on the pain scale. Today, two days after her visit with Sharon, she is still feeling incredible relief. I am in shock and cannot convey how grateful we are to Sharon for her help. If you have ever considered acupuncture but were not sure, this is the person to meet with. She is incredible at both what she does and who she is."
